well, it comes from the greek "necros", death; and "tar", one who overcomes. so said because the drink was supposed to make one immortal.who knew! thanks for asking.

Ditto for the OED2, "of obscure origin." The English word comes from Latin, which is from the Greek. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess.
